Science-based support for 61 million people in the U.S.
People who live in rural America are disproportionately more likely to develop heart disease, have strokes or have high blood pressure. This happens for a number of reasons, including a lack of health care options. The American Heart Association is working with people in those communities to erase these disparities.
The Health Equity Research Network on Improving Access to Care and other Health Inequities in Rural America
is a $20 million addition to our ongoing work to improve health in rural America.
Fulfilling Our Commitments
Rural health challenges are a major barrier to health equity that we’ve vowed to tackle through our 10 Commitments. Two other barriers we are focusing on are social determinants of health and structural racism. We’ve surpassed our goals in Commitment 1 (investing in new research focused on reducing health inequities and structural racism) and Commitment 2 (building community-led solutions addressing those issues). And we advocated for continued expansion of health coverage through Medicaid to all 50 states, to help people struggling financially get the care they need.
See how we’re progressing on our Commitments.
We’re working alongside communities to improve health where people live, including access to nutritious foods, quality health care and educational information.
Food and Health
Unleash a Powerful Tool: Nutritious Eating
Food Is Medicine
Our Food Is Medicine Initiative works to ensure people get the healthy foods they need to help prevent and manage chronic disease. It also supports research to discover the best food-based treatment options for chronic disease.
Food Is Medicine Initiative
Periodic Table of Food
The Periodic Table of Food pursues data-driven solutions to diet-related diseases and to improving the global food supply. We are working with The Rockefeller Foundation, and with inaugural partner Kroger, to help millions benefit from a more holistic approach to diet and health.
Creating Equitable Workplaces
We’re committed to building a more equitable workplace that leads to better health for all. Member companies of the American Heart Association CEO Roundtable are dedicated to improving employee and community health and hope by sharing resources
and taking bold steps toward health equity. Another initiative, Health Equity in the Workforce, convenes employers and industry leaders to help improve the health and well-being of employees.
Advocating for
Systems Change
The American Heart Association champions public policies on the national, state and local level that foster more equitable health care for all.
Medicaid
Robust Action Reduces Inequities
Research shows expansion of Medicaid has helped improve cardiac care, with reduced out-of-hospital deaths and socioeconomic disparities in care and increased prevention and screening. This past year, we
supported successful Medicaid expansion efforts in North Carolina and
South Dakota. And 12 additional states extended postpartum coverage in Medicaid to 12 months, bringing the total number of states that have broadened Medicaid to 46, plus the District of Columbia.
1 in 4 people covered by Medicaid have a history of heart disease
Advocacy Wins
Lifesaving Policies Succeed at Every Level
One important way we stand with our communities is by advocating for laws and policies that help people access care, avoid tobacco and eat healthier. In addition to our accomplishments on the national level, we achieved 189 state and local “wins.” Some of the significant victories at the national, state and local levels include:
More AEDs in Schools
Professional sports figures lent their voices to the effort to put automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in schools across the country.
Access to AEDs Act would support lifesaving response to sudden cardiac arrest
